"UNDIVIDED ATTENTION. UNSURPASSED CARE." The mission of Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland is to ensure the delivery of high quality pediatric care for all children through regional primary and subspecialty networks, a strong education and teaching program, a diverse workforce, state of the art research programs and facilities, and nationally recognized child advocacy efforts. In 1912, nurse Bertha Wright, and a group of East Bay women founded the hospital which today is known as Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland. | Children’s Hospital is the oldest pediatric medical center between Los Angeles and Seattle. Children's Hospital has provided exceptional medical care for children in the region and beyond for 95 years. Today, with 191 licensed beds, Children’s Hospital’s medical center offers outstanding patient care, and also supports nationally recognized pediatric teaching and research. Children’s Hospital has expanded its role over the years. From modest beginnings it’s grown into a regional pediatric medical center with specialized staff and facilities able to treat rare illnesses and health problems. Because the doctors, nurses and other specialists at Children’s Hospital work exclusively with kids every day, they see the subtle things others could miss. They can find where it hurts when a child is too young to tell them. And they know it takes more than advanced pediatric medicine to speed a child’s recovery. It takes an entire organization focused on all of a child’s needs. Including the need to simply be a child. That’s why, along with some of the world’s most sophisticated treatment and technology, you’ll also see an art therapist working with kids at their bedsides, a pediatric anesthesiologist using toys to relax a 3-year-old before surgery, and an endless array of other comforts for children. Not just because they love kids, but also because they understand the science behind giving children a sense of well-being. They can do all this because they are the only independent children’s hospital in Northern California. That means all of their resources, and their entire Bay Area team, are focused on kids, and only kids. It’s why so many children get better at Children's Hospital. And why you would want to ensure your child has access to this level of care, should it ever be needed. With the Children's Hospital Research Institute (CHORI) as a subsidiary to the hospital, clinical and basic research teams work together to advance treatments of life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, sickle cell disease, obesity, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and HIV/AIDS.
