You've got to take the time to read the article 'The Ocean Rules Climate … Climate Rules the Ocean'. Ocean Conservancy has done a fantastic job describing the consequences of Global Warming for our oceans. "The ocean is the engine that drives our planet’s climate. It is our life support system, providing much of the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the resources we depend on for life every day. The ocean is essential for life.
Unfortunately, the ocean will be the first ecosystem to suffer widespread effects of global climate change..." |

Educational Session at Children's Hospital - January 2008 |

Late January, Stephane and Jean-Philippe visited the kids and teachers of the Hospital School Program at the Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland. Their first trip was intended as an introduction of the project 'Le Flying Fish' - a sailboat race from San Francisco, CA to Kaneohe, HI to happen in July 2008. The kids were mostly between the ages of 7 and 15 years old. Stephane and Jean-Philippe started with a visual presentation, showing things like the start at the Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco and the equally picturesque finish near the Kaneohe Bay in Oahu. Stephane and Jean-Philippe spent a lot of time answering questions that couldn't wait till the end; such as "How do you sleep? What do you eat? How long will it take? Can you see dolphins or sharks? Why do you do this?" The kids learned some interesting facts about their environment; such as the Pacific Ocean being the largest ocean: almost half of the Earth's water surface and about a third of the Earth's total surface area. They also learned about Point Nemo 'the place in the ocean that is farthest from any land' and its location. | JP pointing to the start of the Pacific Cup

Sunday was a required 'Safety at Sea' seminar. Check out the video showing flare, liferaft and lifejacket demos. Do check your inflatable PFDs regularly! Last time Stephane had tested his life jacket was before the Pac Cup 2006. However, performing a test last Friday he noticed the bladder was badly leaking, meaning he might have very well sailed in the Transpac 2007 with a defective life jacket. No need to trigger the cartridge for those who have auto inflatable life jackets, it is quite easy to blow it by mouth. Simply leave it inflated over night and check it the next morning. No excuses for not doing it. | lifejacket bladder

Three months ago the cargo ship 'Cosco Busan' leaked 58,000 gallons of oil into San Francisco Bay and now it is a 2.7 million-gallon sewage spill! And in both cases there was a delay to inform the proper authorities and the public. Cannot we learn from our mistakes? |

At Sailors on a Mission we applaud Whole Foods Market for taking the lead about eliminating disposable plastic grocery bags at checkouts. They estimate it will keep 100 million new plastic grocery bags out of our environment between Earth Day (April 22nd) and the end of this year alone. They're telling their customers to 'reuse!'. Just plain common sense... we like that very much. We hope consumers will fully support their action so it can show the way to other major retailers. If you need to be convinced click on 'Read more...' below. |
