"The ocean is the engine that drives our planet’s climate. It is our life support system, providing much of the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the resources we depend on for life every day. The ocean is essential for life.
Unfortunately, the ocean will be the first ecosystem to suffer widespread effects of global climate change..."
"There is no shortage of scientific studies documenting the degradation of the world’s oceans, the decline of marine ecosystems and the collapse of important fish species. Several have appeared in the last month. What is in short supply is a sustained effort by world governments and other institutions to do something about it..."
Man's effect on world's oceans revealed - The Daily Telegraph
Thursday, 14 February 2008
"Almost half of the world's oceans have been seriously affected by over-fishing, pollution and climate change, according to a major study of man's impact on marine life. An international team of 19 scientists have published the first ever comprehensive map showing the combined impact of human activity on the planet's seas and oceans..."
Three months ago the cargo ship 'Cosco Busan' leaked 58,000 gallons of oil into San Francisco Bay and now it is a 2.7 million-gallon sewage spill! And in both cases there was a delay to inform the proper authorities and the public. Cannot we learn from our mistakes?

At Sailors on a Mission we applaud Whole Foods Market for taking the lead about eliminating disposable plastic grocery bags at checkouts. They estimate it will keep 100 million new plastic grocery bags out of our environment between Earth Day (April 22nd) and the end of this year alone. They're telling their customers to 'reuse!'. Just plain common sense... we like that very much. We hope consumers will fully support their action so it can show the way to other major retailers.
If you need to be convinced click on 'Read more...' below.
Sailors on a Mission will take part of Earth Hour 2008, a worldwide event to take a stand for the environment!
Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.
This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. As a result, at 8pm on March 29, 2008 millions of people will unite and switch off for Earth Hour.
Same day, same local time wherever you live on Earth.
If you want to help with the rescue of oiled wildlife or clean beaches contact Oiled Wildlife Care Network. Corporations care about one thing... your money! Now with information provided by Climate Counts consumers can influence companies to also care about our planet. The non-profit foundation Climate Counts created a scorecard to rank how serious companies are about fighting global warming.
Sailors have a unique opportunity to demonstrate concern and respect for our threatened oceans and their inhabitants.
By signing the Blue Water Charter, each sailor agrees to limit the impact of their sailing activities on the marine environment. But perhaps more importantly, they agree to become an ambassador for the future of the oceans, estuaries, and inshore waters.
"The world's oceans are turning acidic due to the buildup of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, and scientists say the effects on marine life will be catastrophic..."
